Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE)

Daily, 3,000 young people begin to smoke, representing more than 1 million each year. Of these, one third will die from diseases related to tobacco use.

Historical Background: In 1989, the California State Department of Education made the decision to provide school districts with an Entitlement Grant to develop programs to prevent young people from using tobacco. This program is funded by Tobacco Tax Proposition 99.

What is the goal of the Tobacco Use Prevention Education Program?
The goal is to develop and implement programs / services to prevent young people from using tobacco.

What is the program and how does it work?
A program that provides tobacco prevention education and cessation readiness programs to all students in grades 4-8.

  • S HPD provides professional development in the area of Tobacco Use Prevention Education to district health educators.
  • Professional development is provided to the elementary schools’ Health Advocates and middle schools’ Healthy School Teams and high schools’ Health Promotion Committees.
  • Health Education Teacher Leaders assist in providing the professional development.
  • Districtwide events are implemented in all schools, such as: Great American Smokeout, Red Ribbon week, Jump Rope for Heart and Save a Sweetheart.
  • SHPD provides health information to parents through the PTA newsletter “Cablegram”.
