Community-Based Organization Program (CBO)
...to ensure optimal working relationships between school sitesand
community based orginizations.
Historical Background: The San Francisco Unified School District and many service providers have a long history of working together for the benefit of students and families.
School Health Programs Department (SHPD) collaborates with community based organizations, agencies, private and public institutions, as well as local city departments to “...assist school sites in building their capacity to develop, implement and coordinate programs and services to meet the needs of the whole child,” (SHPD, Vision/Mission Statement.) Inspired by SHPD’s mission, the CBO Program is committed to assisting sites in developing and maintaining vital connections to community resources.
What is the CBO Program?
The CBO Program seeks to create a district wide process and procedures to ensure the optimal working relationship between school sites and community based organizations, striving to have an equal distribution of service provider resources throughout SFUSD.
Current Status:
- CBO Service Provider and Classroom Speaker Orientation: The CBO Orientation/ workshop is conducted twice a year and covers relevant SFUSD information, including policies & guide lines; service provider responsibilities; an overview of “school culture” and strategies for successfully interfacing with school sites. Additional workshop components include: procedures for successful presentations; helpful tips on how to support students and teachers in the classroom presentation setting; strategies for overcoming barriers and stumbling blocks; and a review process related to materials/presenters dealing with sexuality. A list of CBO’s who have participated in the orientation is updated and distributed annually to inform school sites of CBO’s with whom they may want to collaborate.
- Curriculum and Materials Review Task Force (CMRTF): The CMRTF, composed of teachers, parents, administrators and community members, meets a minimum of twice yearly. Materials are submitted for review by district staff, community based organizations and agencies wishing to make classroom presentations. The Task Force reviews materials for age and developmental appropriateness, cultural inclusion, relevance to curriculum and consistency with community norms. Following these meetings, the Health Education Human Sexuality Related Approved Speakers list is updated and disseminated to all school sites.
