Primary Intervention Program (PIP)

…Early socialization and support school success.

Historical Background:
California Department of Mental Health Funds the Early Mental Health Initiative (EMHI) as outlined in AB 1650. San Francisco Unified School District has participated in the Primary Intervention Program (PIP) since its inception. Our community partners are Edgewood Children’s Center and Department of Public Health – Community Mental Health, providing suspension, education and consultation.

Nationwide surveys have documented that at least 30% of all elementary school students experience moderate to severe school adjustment difficulties. It has been demonstrated that programs based on systemic early intervention, backed by prompt and effective intervention, can prevent later
adjustment difficulties.

What is PIP?
The purpose of the program is to enhance the social and emotional development of young students (grades k-3) who are experiencing mild to moderate school adjustment difficulties. Using a
systematic selection process of students most likely to benefit from program participation alternative personnel provide direct services to students under the ongoing supervision and training by
credentialed school psychologists in collaboration with professional staff of the cooperating mental health entities.

What are the Goals of the Program?
To enhance the social and emotional development of young students; increase development of young students; increase the likelihood that students experiencing mild to moderate school adjustment difficulties will succeed in school, increase personal competencies related to life success; and
minimize the need for more extensive and costly services as they grow older.

Current Status?
The Primary Intervention Program is operating in ten elementary school sites: Marshall, Sherman Shindar, Rooftop, Tenderloin, Sunset, Sanchez, Muramac, Liwthal and ER Taylor
