In the Classroom
- Select a daily reader to read the lunch menu to the class
as they line up to go to the cafeteria
- Review the menu for the next day and remind students
who do not want to eat the school lunch to bring a healthy
meal from home
- Discuss the part of the lunch that should be eaten first,
before treat foods
- Teach lessons that explain the benefits of eating fruits
and vegetables at lunch
- Compare the nutrients/food groups offered in a school
lunch vs. store bought boxed lunches
In the Cafeteria
- Eat lunch with your students once a month, and show them
your healthy lunch
- Track lunchtime consumption of fruits and vegetables
and make individual or classroom graphs
- Encourage students to eat until they are full, and not
throw food away because they are in a rush to go outside
to play
- Encourage students to be respectful and use manners
- Do research: Look at the lunches students bring from
home, notice who is not eating or who is filling up on
treat foods. Target a lesson or talk to parents based on
what you observe
Home Connection
- Talk with parents about students who are not eating lunch
or bringing unhealthy choices
- Offer tips to pack healthy lunches
- Discuss diet concerns with parents at parent/teacher
conferences
- Before distributing the monthly lunch menu, review menu
with your students. Have students circle the days that
they will be eating school lunch, to show to their parents/caregivers
