Family Health Event: healthy foods and ideas nurture body and mind

A Family Health Event is an excellent way to give students and their families nutritional information while teaching them how to play fun games that encourage physical activity. When the event is combined with a Math, Literacy, or Science Night, it serves as a great way to reinforce the California Academic Standards. Family Health Events provide healthy foods and ideas to both the body and the mind.

Get Started

  • Select a date and get on your school’s calendar early
  • Assemble a Wellness Team (minimum four adults and two students)
  • Decide which event booths your school wants to feature
  • Follow the planning schedule (pdf)

Results: Integrate Nutrition and Physical Activity Modules To Improve the Quality of the School Event

Measuring with carrots
  • Students and parents learn new ways to integrate math into their everyday life, while also receiving nutrition messages
  • One teacher and one parent from each grade level can staff a table
  • While the events committee does the planning, the volunteers can show up 30 minutes prior to the event to help finish last minute details and to receive event assignments
  • Combine the math and nutrition nights to make math night more interesting and make everyone realize how easy it is to connect food to other subjects
  • Prize ideas include: hats, water bottles, lunch bags, aprons and stickers

Challenges:  Time, Time, Time

  • Find time on the calendar. This is where combining two events is helpful.
  • The first team meeting can take place six weeks prior to the event and then meet again three weeks prior to solidify the plan and begin recruiting volunteers

Solutions

  • Start early in both planning and for the day of the event
  • Delegate responsibilities equally to make sure all jobs are covered and to ensure that everyone is working together
