Health Education Policy

Teaching of nutrition and physical fitness education is supported by District Policy #19-24SP1, which requires use of district adopted materials, skills based content focused, and professional development Health Education mandates.

  • Elementary School: 20 lessons / grade level / year
  • Middle School: 30 hours / grade level /year
  • High School: One semester graduation requirement

Physical Education Policy

Physical Education is mandated by District and State Education Codes as follows:

  • Elementary School: 200 minutes / 10 days (K-6)
  • Middle School: 400 minutes / 10 days
  • High School: 2 years of 400 minutes / 10 days, and SFUSD swim test

Wellness Policy: Healthy School Nutrition and Physical Activity Policy

The SFUSD School Board adopted Resolution # 211-12A8 to create a District policy related to healthy eating and physical activity.

Policy Key Points . . .

SFUSD Nutrition Standard

All school food must meet USDA nutritional standards: Breakfast/ Lunch Programs, food sold and snack programs. In addition, SFUSD has established a Nutrition Standard for other snacks and beverages.

Summary of the SFUSD Nutrition Standard

  • Beverages may include only: plain bottled water, 100 percent fruit juice, blends of 100 percent fruit juice and water with no added sweetener, and one percent or fat free milk.
  • Entrees/snacks/side dishes may be no more than 30 percent calories from fat, with no more than 10 percent calories from saturated and trans fat, and be no more than 35 percent sugar by weight. In addition, snacks and side dishes must contain specified levels of vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber.

School Environment

Principals and staff will promote a school environment supportive of healthy eating, through role modeling, serving nutritious food at school meetings and events, and by refraining from using candy and snacks of minimal nutritional value as rewards for students.

Vending

Vending machines may carry only beverages and snacks, which meet district nutrition standards.
