The Nutrition/Physical Education Teacher Leader (NPTL) is a full time classroom teacher who in addition to classroom duties is paid a stipend to:  promote nutrition education and physical activity, spearhead site-based activities and act as a liaison between the school site and the School Health Programs’ Nutrition Education Project.  The NPTL has various duties as listed below. 

In the classroom NPTL’s:

  • Teach ten nutrition and physical activity promotion lessons from District-adopted curriculum and Resource Tub curricula
  • Document five nutrition and five physical activity lessons on lesson feedback forms
  • Conduct one field trip to a farmers’ market, produce market, supermarket, garden or farm
  • Host the Chef in the Classroom program and complete reflection sheets on pre/post lessons and Chef visit

 

At the school site NPTL’s:

  • Attend three nutrition and wellness team meetings per year
  • Attend five central SHPD-NPTL informational/planning meetings
  • Present workshop modules
  • Facilitate ten Harvest Tastings
  • Organize and inventory SPARK P.E. equipment
  • Promote SFUSD Wellness Policy and SHPD/NEP website

 

They also collaborate with the Site Nutrition Coordinator, Health Advocate, other

  • on-site NPTLs & SHPD staff (i.e., Nurse, LSP) to:
  • Publicize nutrition awareness and physical activity promotion
  • Collaborate with Nutrition Coordinator to organize and promote Physical Activity Awareness Month (February) and Nutrition Education Awareness Month (March)
  • Organize, promote and participate in one to two Family Health Nights/Events and/or other all-school events with nutrition/physical activity component (i.e. Health Fair)
  • Attend one to two site-based nutrition education professional development(s); and one to two central nutrition education workshops;  and one central grade level SPARK (Introduction and Booster) professional development workshop (introduction or booster - additional stipend or substitute teacher provided)
  • Encourage faculty attendance at site-based and district-wide nutrition education and physical education (SPARK) professional development.

 

NPTL’s receive a stipend for completing a minimum of 45 hours of work outside of the regular school day, including preparation and documentation of lessons, meeting attendance, activity and professional development planning and implementation.

 

The Nutrition Education Project Goals are to: support efforts to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables and promote 60 minutes of daily physical activity in children and teens, and 30 minutes in adults.
